More About the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant
Located in a suburb north of Detroit, the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant was built in 1953 and operated by the United States military for producing jet engines and ballistic missles. The 286-acre facility was later converted to an automobile plant and purchased by Chrysler Corporation in 1983. Since it has been the birthplace of numerous Chrysler, Plymouth, and Dodge vehicles. As of 2018, the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant is responsible for manufacturing the modern lineup of Ram 1500 full-size pickup trucks.
The state-of-the-art facility has more than 7,000 employees and serves as a model of sustainability among modern automobile manufacturing plants. In 2019 the SHAP was awarded bronze status for its efforts in implementing World Class Manufacturing (WCM), a methodology that focuses on eliminating waste, increasing productivity, and improving quality and safety.
